Elon Musk’s X Expands Horizons with Money Transmitter License in Utah

In a strategic move, Elon Musk’s social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), secured a money-transmitter license from Utah, marking its 15th state approval for potential payment features. This development, granted on Friday according to the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System & Registry, empowers X to enable money transfers, akin to platforms like PayPal’s Venmo, opening new avenues for user transactions.

This licensing breakthrough comes as X aims to diversify its revenue streams beyond digital advertising, which faced challenges following Musk’s controversial engagement with an X user promoting an antisemitic conspiracy theory. This incident led to a pause in spending by major advertisers and prompted an exodus from the platform.

Since acquiring Twitter in October 2022, Musk has expressed his vision of transforming the platform into an “everything app,” reminiscent of the popular Chinese app WeChat. This broader functionality would encompass messaging, taxi hailing, and now, with the money-transmitter license, facilitate seamless money transfers among users.

Utah joins New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia, Maryland, and Michigan in granting approval, positioning X to become a multifaceted platform with enhanced financial capabilities. This latest move signals Musk’s persistent efforts to redefine the platform’s trajectory and unlock new potentials beyond its social media roots.
