Ladakh Shuts Down in Protest Over Activist’s Detention
PTK NEWS DESK
Ladakh witnessed a complete shutdown today as the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) and the Apex Body of Leh (ABL) called for a bandh to protest the detention of prominent Ladakhi environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk. Wangchuk was detained last night at the Singhu border in Delhi while en route to lead a march toward Gandhi Samadhi.
The bandh saw widespread participation across both Kargil and Leh, with businesses, schools, and transport services coming to a standstill. Local leaders from KDA and ABL condemned the detention, calling it an attack on peaceful activism and the democratic right to protest.
The protest march by Wangchuk was aimed at drawing attention to environmental and constitutional concerns facing Ladakh. His detention has sparked anger across the region, with residents demanding his immediate release and greater attention to Ladakh’s unique challenges.
