PTK NEWS DESK
The National Medical Council (NMC) has issued a stern warning to Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Medical College in Srinagar, signaling potential reductions in its MBBS quota due to persistent deficiencies. The warning, conveyed through a Show Cause Notice dated 29/04/2024, underscores the college’s failure to address longstanding issues despite repeated alerts from the authorities.
The notice, signed by Director Under Graduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) Shambhu Sharan Kumar, points out the college’s non-compliance with directives regarding the submission of annual declaration forms and video recordings of examinations. SKIMS has been instructed to furnish details on the NMC Portal and provide video recordings of annual examinations, shedding light on deficiencies in the Aadhar Enabled Biometric Attendance System.
Moreover, experts nominated by the NMC have identified deficiencies across various facets of SKIMS Medical College, including faculty attendance records, bed capacity, and medical procedures. These observations have prompted the NMC to summon the college for a virtual hearing on May 1, offering a final opportunity to address the discrepancies.
Failure to provide satisfactory explanations may result in penalties such as seat reductions or monetary fines, in accordance with the Maintenance of Standard of Medical Education Regulation 2023. The NMC has cautioned SKIMS Medical College that further inaction could lead to more severe repercussions.
Principal Dr. Irfan Rabani, acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, has confirmed the receipt of the Show Cause Notice and subsequent discussions with NMC authorities. Dr. Rabani expressed optimism about resolving the issues promptly, citing a recent virtual meeting where detailed information was provided.
The warning from the NMC serves as a wake-up call for SKIMS Medical College to swiftly address the identified deficiencies and uphold the standards of medical education, ensuring the quality and integrity of healthcare delivery in the region.
