Modi and Nahyan Unveil RuPay Card in Abu Dhabi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE’s President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan inaugurated the UPI RuPay card service in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

President Nahyan marked the beginning of the service by swiping a card embossed with his name.

Modi hailed the launch as the start of a new era in FinTech and emphasized its significance during his meeting with President Nahyan.

The bilateral meeting witnessed the exchange of various agreements, including the interlinking of instant payment platforms – UPI (India) and AANI (UAE), enabling seamless cross-border transactions.

These agreements build upon the MoU signed last year during Modi’s visit to Abu Dhabi, further strengthening financial cooperation between India and the UAE.

Additionally, an agreement was reached on interlinking domestic debit/credit cards, enhancing the universal acceptance of RuPay across the UAE.

Earlier announcements included India’s decision to exclude Mauritius and Sri Lanka from UPI payments, highlighting the global expansion of India’s Unified Payments Interface.

The launch in Abu Dhabi follows the recent inauguration of UPI at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, aligning with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of globalizing UPI.

Modi’s visit to the Gulf region also includes the inauguration of the first Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi, followed by a trip to Doha, Qatar.
