Over 121 Cyclists Participate in World Bicycle Day Cyclothon at Shopian

Shopian, June 3 (PTK): More than 121 cyclists participated in a grand Cyclothon organised by the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) Shopian on Tuesday to mark World Bicycle Day 2026 under the banners of the Fit India Movement and the 100-Day Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyan.

The event was organised under the overall supervision of PEM Raja Basharat Wachkoo and was flagged off by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Talat Mehmood from the New Bus Stand at Batpora.

The Cyclothon commenced from Batpora and concluded at the District Police Lines Shopian, drawing enthusiastic participation from students, youth and cycling enthusiasts representing various educational institutions across the district.

Participants cycled through the designated route carrying messages promoting physical fitness, healthy lifestyles, environmental sustainability and a drug-free society.

As part of the programme, a pledge ceremony was also conducted during which participants reaffirmed their commitment towards making Shopian free from the menace of drug abuse and supporting the objectives of the Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir campaign.

Officials said the event aimed to highlight the importance of cycling as an eco-friendly, economical and healthy mode of transportation while encouraging citizens, particularly the youth, to adopt active lifestyles and stay away from substance abuse.

The large participation witnessed during the event reflected growing awareness among young people regarding health, fitness, environmental responsibility and social well-being.

The Department of Youth Services and Sports Shopian expressed gratitude to the Police Department, Health Department, participating educational institutions and all cyclists for their support and contribution towards making the event a success.

The Cyclothon formed part of a series of awareness and outreach programmes being conducted across the district to promote fitness and strengthen the anti-drug movement among youth.(PTK)
