PTK News Desk Reports

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has intensified its crackdown on illicit inducements in Jammu and Kashmir. With the General Elections 2024 in progress, the ECI announced a staggering seizure of cash, liquor, drugs, and freebies worth Rs 4 Crore in the region.

This proactive measure by the ECI marks a historic milestone, with the commission poised to achieve the highest-ever seizures of inducements in the 75-year history of Lok Sabha elections in India. The crackdown, which began on March 1st, has seen an average daily seizure of Rs. 100 crore, amounting to a total of Rs. 4650 crores seized even before the commencement of polling.

The ECI’s efforts surpass the total seizures made during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, reflecting a steadfast commitment to ensure fair and transparent electoral processes. Notably, 45% of the seizures comprise drugs and narcotics, underscoring the commission’s special focus on combating such illegal activities.

The success of the operation is attributed to comprehensive planning, enhanced collaboration among enforcement agencies, active citizen participation, and the effective use of technology. The ECI’s determination to uphold the integrity of elections is evident in its resolve to create a level playing field for all candidates and parties.

The commission’s multi-pronged surveillance approach includes monitoring all modes of transport, including road, air, and coastal routes, to prevent the illicit movement of inducements. The stringent measures extend to checking helicopters and non-scheduled flights, leaving no room for electoral malpractices.

The magnitude of seizures underscores the gravity of the situation, with countrywide seizures totaling over Rs 12,000 crores, including Rs 4.2881700 Crore in Jammu and Kashmir alone. As the election period continues, the ECI remains steadfast in its mission to conduct free and fair elections, setting a precedent for electoral integrity across the nation.
