Gen Upendra Dwivedi Takes Charge as New Army Chief

Srinagar, Jun 30 :Gen Upendra Dwivedi has assumed command as the 30th Chief of the Army Staff, succeeding Gen Manoj Pande. Before his new role, Gen Dwivedi led the Northern Command from 2022 to 2024. He now takes charge of the 1.3 million-strong Army at a critical time, facing security challenges along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.Gen Dwivedi’s responsibilities will include coordinating with the Navy and Air Force to implement the government’s plan for theatre commands. An alumnus of Sainik School, Rewa, he was commissioned into the 18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles on December 15, 1984, and later commanded the unit. His nearly 40-year career includes diverse command, staff, instructional, and foreign appointments, with command roles at the regiment, brigade, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (East), and 9 Corps levels.His decorations include the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, and three GOC-in-C Commendation Cards. As Northern Army Commander, Gen Dwivedi provided strategic guidance and operational oversight for sustained operations along the northern and western borders and counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir. He played a key role in negotiations with China regarding border issues and advocated for the modernization and equipping of the Army’s largest command with indigenous equipment under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
