Terrorists Don’t Play By Rules, So Country’s Response To Them Can’t Have Rules: Jaishankar

PUNE: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized India’s commitment to respond decisively to acts of terrorism originating from across the borders. Speaking at an event titled ‘Why Bharat Matters: Opportunity for youth and participation in global scenario’, Jaishankar addressed the inherent challenge posed by terrorism, stating, “Terrorists do not play by any rules. The response to terrorists cannot have any rules.”

 

Reflecting on past responses to terrorism, Jaishankar criticized the approach taken after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, highlighting the need for a more robust stance against perpetrators. He underscored the importance of a clear and unwavering policy towards countries harboring or supporting terrorism.

 

In a candid assessment, Jaishankar acknowledged the complexities of maintaining relationships with certain countries, notably Pakistan. He urged introspection on India’s part and stressed the need for clarity in identifying and confronting terrorism, regardless of its source.

 

Drawing historical parallels, Jaishankar traced the roots of India’s struggle against terrorism back to its independence, citing instances of cross-border aggression and infiltration. He reiterated India’s steadfast stance against terrorism, emphasizing that it should never be tolerated or appeased for the sake of diplomacy.
