IAF Successfully Conducts Overnight Trial on Emergency Landing Strip in Bijbehara

The Indian Air Force (IAF) recently conducted an overnight trial run on a 3.5 km-long emergency landing strip situated on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway in the Bijbehara area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
The trial, which commenced from 03:45 am and concluded by 04:30 am, witnessed the participation of the IAF in at least nine trials on the strip. To ensure the smooth execution of the operation, traffic was diverted through alternative routes, and thorough sanitization of areas surrounding the strip was carried out. Additionally, a three-tier security setup was established, underscoring the meticulous planning and execution by the authorities.
The primary objective of these trials was to evaluate the feasibility of emergency landings, for which the versatile Chinook helicopter was utilized. The Chinook, renowned for its heavy lift capabilities and versatility, is a crucial asset in various military operations, ranging from troop transport to disaster relief efforts.
The construction of the airstrip, which commenced in 2020 at a cost of Rs 119 crore, marks a significant milestone in bolstering the region’s infrastructure and readiness for unforeseen circumstances.
