SRINAGAR PTK : In a landmark decision, a court in Srinagar has handed down a life sentence to Sajid Altaf Sheikh of Buchwara Dalgate for his involvement in a brutal acid attack on a woman in Hawal on February 1, 2022. Principal Sessions Judge Srinagar Jawad Ahmed presided over the proceedings, delivering justice to the victim and her family.

The sentencing, accompanied by a Rs 40 lakh fine, underscores the severity of the crime and serves as a strong deterrent against such heinous acts in the future. The courtroom was packed as the verdict was announced, reflecting the widespread condemnation and outrage sparked by the incident.

The tragic event unfolded when the accused, along with an unnamed juvenile accomplice, perpetrated the attack on the 24-year-old woman, allegedly in retaliation for her rejection of a marriage proposal. The callousness of the act reverberated throughout the community, prompting swift action from law enforcement authorities.

In response, a specialized investigation team, led by SP North Raja Zuhaib (JKPS) and comprising officers from various police stations, including Safakadal, Nowhatta, and the Srinagar Women’s Police Station, was formed to probe the case (FIR No 08/2022). Their tireless efforts and commitment to justice have resulted in the successful prosecution of the perpetrator.

Today’s verdict sends a clear message that perpetrators of violence against women will be held accountable for their actions. It is a testament to the resilience of the justice system and the determination of law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and security of every individual in our society.
