Snowfall Blankets Kashmir’s Higher Reaches, Disrupts Srinagar-Leh Highway
Kashmir’s picturesque landscapes were transformed into a winter wonderland on Sunday as snowfall finally graced the higher reaches after a prolonged period of dry weather. The scenic beauty, however, came at a cost as the Srinagar-Leh National Highway was forced to shut down due to the accumulating snow.
The iconic Zojila Pass, a vital artery along the Srinagar-Leh highway, experienced a gentle dusting of snow, while the Sonamarg health resort saw light to moderate snowfall. Approximately 2 to 3 inches of snow covered Zojila Pass and Sonamarg, creating a serene white panorama.
The picturesque scenery, however, disrupted the movement of traffic on the Zojila Pass, as officials made the prudent decision to suspend traffic due to accumulated snow and treacherous road conditions. Authorities stated that traffic would resume only after clearance from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
To navigate the slippery roads caused by snow and frost, an advisory from the Sub Divisional Magistrate Kangan mandated, “Only vehicles fitted with anti-skid chains and 4×4 vehicles will be allowed to travel from Gagangeer to Sonamarg and back.” This order, effective immediately, aims to ensure the safety of travelers
