D&FCO team seizes haul of intoxicant drugs

PRESS TRUST OF KASHMIR JAMMU, AUGUST 25: The teams of Drug and Food Control Organisation have seized huge stocks of formulations containing Tapentadol (14,095 Tablets) worth more than Rs  3 Lakh during a special drive launched across the Jammu Division.

  The team of Regulatory Officers of the Organization seized tramadol, tapentadol and allied pharmaceutical preparations during surprise inspections of De-addiction Centers, Pharma Dealers & Chemists Shops. under the relevant provisions of the  Drugs & Cosmetics Act from and  investigations in the matter have been initiated.

 According to the Organization, the inspection drive was conducted after evident reports regarding unethical trade and misuse of the tramadol, tapentadol by the anti social/nefarious elements for the purpose of addiction and intoxication especially amongst the youth.

“During the special drive the Inspecting teams observed that some  firms were stocking huge quantities of Drugs Formulations consisting of Tapentadol especially by the De-addiction Centers/ Psychiatric-Clinics and selling the same in gross violation of the mandatory provisions,”  the department said.

During the drive, Operations of  Seventeen Medical Establishments were disallowed u/s 22 (d) of Drugs & Cosmetics Act, 1940 on spot which included four each in Jammu  and Samba,  two in Kathua, three each in Udhampur and Rajouri and one in Ramban. “The establishments were indulging in unethical trade practices particularly sale of habit forming formulations without maintaining records” it informed further.

In light of these observations, the Department has directed all the Authorized Stockists dealing with such kind of formulations to strictly restrict sale and distribution of aforementioned restricted drugs for the legitimate requirements only.

They have been further directed to submit distribution details of formulations consisting of habit forming ingredients  on a monthly  basis  through mail :deputycontrollerjammu@gmail.com ,so that the Drugs Control Officers ( Concerned)  shall check the rationality and curb the unethical trade of such drugs, failing which severe action  shall be taken against such erring firms.

“Since these formulations which are otherwise Drug of Choice for patients suffering from severe/critical disease in their pain management,  have high potential for addiction and respiratory depression when misused and taken in high doses. Therefore, the Stakeholders are impressed upon to ensure judicious use of such formulations and maintain complete records open for  cross verification” said Deputy Drugs Controller, Jammu.

He further said that modalities are being worked out to channelize and restrict their procurement and sale through identified dealers only especially near tertiary Care and District Hospitals to curb the diversion and misuse of aforementioned drugs without affecting the legitimate requirements of the patients for prevention and cure.

State Drugs Controller, J&K has warned the defaulters to desist from any unethical trade practices, failing which strict action as warranted under the Act shall be taken against them.
