Delhi Jan, 06 (PTK) India has reported its first case of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection. An eight-month-old baby in Bengaluru tested positive at Baptist Hospital. The child showed symptoms of respiratory illness but had no travel history.
HMPV is known to cause respiratory infections, especially in young children, older adults, and individuals with compromised immune systems. Symptoms include cough, nasal congestion, sore throat, difficulty breathing, and in severe cases, pneumonia or bronchitis.
The Karnataka Health Department has issued advisories urging the public to follow hygiene protocols, such as frequent handwashing, using tissues while sneezing or coughing, avoiding crowded areas, and seeking medical attention for respiratory symptoms.
Currently, there is no specific treatment or vaccine for HMPV, and management focuses on supportive care. Authorities are monitoring the situation and have enhanced testing to detect cases promptly.(PTK)
