Cocoon Auction market inaugurated at Sarnal

PRESS TRUST OF KASHMIR ANANTNAG, AUGUST 22: Additional Deputy Commissioner, Anantnag, Ghulam Hassan Sheikh today inaugurated Cocoon Auction Market at Sarnal Anantnag. The market has been organized to facilitate open sale of cocoon produced by farmers of Anantnag and Kulgam district by the Department of Sericulture.

The Department has developed a modern cocoon auction market with storage facilities and residential accommodation for outside buyers so that farmers can fetch the best possible prices.

Speaking on the occasion, ADC Sheikh said that the market will help farmers fetch competitive prices. He said that sericulture is an important activity in the district and to attract more people towards rearing, it is essential that the farmers receive remunerative prices for the hard labour. He appreciated the department for their concerted efforts.

The representatives from Sericulture said that with sustained efforts, rearing of silkworms is emerging as a viable economic activity. They said that technical support is being provided to rearers through various Centrally Sponsored Schemes.

They said payments are being made to farmers in DBT mode. They said various incentive based schemes have also been launched by the UT Govt to attract youth towards this activity and enable them to earn sustainable livelihood.
