Growing drug abuse among Kashmir’s young lot a serious issue: Altaf Thakur

Srinigar Feb 19 (PTK) :Says Huge consignment of drugs coming from across LoC to push Kashmiri youth towards militancy, Police, parents must play extra bit to eradicate drug abuse in Valley

Srinagar, Feb 19: Bhartiya Janata Party J&K spokesman Altaf Thakur took a strong note of growing drug abuse among the large section of Kashmir youth stating after weapons drugs are being now supplied from across the LoC to make Kashmir’s younger generation addicts and to push them towards militancy.

In a statement issued here, Thakur said that a large quantity of drugs is being seized every day across J&K that includes poppy, heroine, charas etc besides large quantity of tablets which signifies that how deep rooted the drug dealers and suppliers’ chain is. “There is hardly any day when police don’t size drugs including opium and heroine in large quantity. The supply is being pushing into this side of fence from across the LoC which has been established by the security agencies time and again,” he said, adding that “drug consignments were found being air-dropped in areas close to LoC by our alert security forces.”

However, Thakur said to target the young generation of Kashmir, huge quantity of heroin, opium, poppy, charas and other drugs are being pumped into the Valley and there is a huge supply chain. “I have observed that young boys are becoming drug addicts and losing their senses. There seems to be a clear motive of our neighbour (Pakistan) to push the Kashmir’s young generation towards militancy by making them drug addicts,” the BJP leader said.

He said that there are reports that even girls took are being lured towards drugs. “In the land of Sufis and Reshis’, use of drugs in such a large quantity is nothing but a blot, which needs to be washed sooner the better. I urge the police to step up its vigil across J&K to plug the growing drug abuse in the Valley,” Thakur said.

He said primary role is that of parents who must keep a close watch on their wards and their activities. “Parents must question their children if they found their wards are indulging in suspicious activities like consuming drugs etc. It is an irony that young boys between the age of 12 to 18 are taking drugs in Kashmir including Srinagar,” Thakur said, adding that “police must constitute teams to check where from these drugs are coming and how easily young boys are managing the same.”

He said BJP leaders will soon launch a drive to create awareness among the youth about harmful effects of drug abuse but police and parents must play extra bit to eradicate the growing menace in conservative Kashmir. (PTK)
