SRINAGAR, (PTK): Five persons were killed and five others remained trapped under snow after an avalanche hit Khardung La Top located at the height of 18,380 feet in Ladkah’s Leh district on Friday.
Two civilian vehicles carrying 10 civilians were swept away and buried under an avalanche of approximately 20 feet depth and of 800 metres length, which hit the Khardung La Top-South Pullu stretch on the world’s highest motorable road on Friday morning. The Army was alerted by two civilian drivers around 7:45 a.m. about the incident.
Till evening 5 dead bodies were recovered and rescue operation put on halt in the evening and will again start in the morning.
All the trapped persons were Army porter. The recovered dead bodies were identified by their relatives as,
1) Nurboo Tsering S/o Tsering Mutup R/o Toktha Zanskar.
2) Thinles Spalzang S/o Tsering Dorjey R/o Toktha Zanskar.
3) Tsewang Tashi L/o Lobzang Chombel R/o Sani, Padum Zanskar.
4) Tsewang Nurboo S/o Sonam Tashi
R/o Abran Zanskar.
5) Lobzang Chombel S/o Nawang Tharchin R/o Bakartse Zanskar.
