Hanuman was a sportsperson: UP minister Chetan Chauhan

Amroha: Former Indian cricketer and now politician Chetan Chauhan has bowled a googly on the Hanuman debate pitch by claiming that the monkey God was a sportsperson.

Swinging the discourse in an altogether different angle, Chauhan said it was not right to discuss Hanuman’s caste and one must rather see Him as a sportsperson for his ability to wrestle his enemies.

“I believe that he ( Hanuman) was a sportsman who use to wrestle with his enemies. All the sportsmen of our country worship him as they require power and energy like him to become victorious,” the ex-cricketer and current Uttar Pradesh sports minister told reporters on Saturday.

He batted for the Hindu deity against a fierce attack of casteism and said a saint like him had no caste. “Players do not worship him because of his caste. There is no caste of a saint, there is no caste of a mystic…we believe in Hanumanji. I consider him as God… I do not want him to get associated with some sort of caste.”

Ever since Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath declared the Hindu deity’s caste as ‘Dalit’, politicians have raced against time to claim the monkey god’s social stratification to suit their preference of the Hindu vote bank. Hanuman has also been called a ‘Jat’, ‘Rajput’ and even a ‘Muslim’ in these past few months.

The discourse has not only irritated voters who remain perplexed as real issues take a backfoot but also peeved seers who have had heard enough ‘slander’ about their diety.
