Mentally unsound person shot dead near army camp in Shopian

SRINAGAR, NOV 03 (PTK): Army on Saturday killed an unidentified person after he, according to police, crossed the security fence of an Army camp located in Puhnoo village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Saturday.

A police spokesman said that at around 3am an unidentified person crossed the fence of Pahnoo army camp and came close to Camp wall. ,Despite repeated warnings from the sentry the individual didn’t stop. The sentry of the post fired in air first but the said person didn’t stop to walk towards Camp. “The sentry fired towards him,” he said.

” In preliminary examination of the body it is believed that the said person might be a mentally challenged,” Police said.

In this regard Police has registered a case. General people is requested identify the person. Anybody having any information about the deceased may contact Police station Shopian on 9596768826″ the statement added.

Meanwhile CPI (M) leader and MLA Kulgam Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami termed unfortunate and condemnable incident.

He added such incidents are most unfortunate.  In the past also such incidents have happened and circumstances of most of these deaths were similar. Draconian laws like the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) allow security forces to shoot at anybody merely on the basis of a suspicion.

While expressing solidarity with the bereaved family, he demanded an immediate end to the civilian killings in the Valley and demanded probe into this unfortunate incident. (PTK)
