Two militants killed in Srinagar encounter

SRINAGAR, OCT 24 (PTK): Two militants were killed and six security forces’ personnel wounded in a fierce gun-battle that took place in Sothu Kothair area of Nowgam on the outskirts of Srinagar on Wednesday morning.

As per reports, the gunfight broke out around 2 AM in the area following a search operation.

“Two militants have been killed and six forces’ personnel wounded in the gunfight,” revealed DIG Central Kashmir, VK Birdi from the encounter site.

The slain militants were identified as PhD scholar Sabzar Sofi and Asif Ahmad Gojri, both residents of Anantnag.

Soon after the news of the killing of the local militants spread across, massive stone-pelting clashes broke out between the youth and forces in parts of Kashmir valley.

As a “precautionary measure”, internet was snapped across Kashmir to prevent law and order situation. Schools and colleges also remained shut in Srinagar district.

“Security forces in the outskirts of Srinagar at Wanbal J/D of P/S Nowgam, launched a cordon and search operation today (Wednesday) morning based on credible input about the presence of the militants,” the police spokesperson said in the statement.

During the operation, militants fired upon the search party, which was retaliated leading to an encounter.

“In the ensuing encounter, two militants were neutralized,” said the police.

“Pertinently, the SOP was followed during the encounter and no collateral damage took place during the encounter. Incriminating materials including arms & ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter,” the statement further read.

In the backdrop of the recent killing of seven civilians in Kulgam district due to a blast in the encounter site, police specifically issued a warning to the locals to not enter the encounter site.

“People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitised and cleared of all the explosives materials if any,” read the statement. (PTK)
