SRINAGAR, OCT 12 (PTK): Normal life come to a grinding halt in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley in wake of the shutdown called by joint resistance leadership (JRL) against the killing of top Hizbul Mujahideen commander Mannan Wani and his associate in a gunfight.
All shops, business establishments, schools and colleges, petrol pumps remained closed while the shutdown also affected the public transport. Reports said that light motor vehicles were only seen plying on the otherwise busy roads of this summer capital. Many government offices also witnessed thin attendance of employees in view of the strike.
Meanwhile in Srinagar, stringent security measures were put in place to thwart any attempt of people to hold anti-India demonstrations. Police said restrictions under Section 144 CrPC were imposed in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of police station Nowhatta, M R Gunj, Khanyar, Safa Kadal and Rainwari since early morning as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order.
The otherwise busy Nallahmar road in the downtown was closed at Braripora, Khanyar, Rajouri Kadal, Nowhatta, Rangar stop and Hawal by forces. All gates of Jamia Masjid were locked and a large number of forces personnel could be seen deployed to prevent people from entering the Jamia.
Reports of shutdown were also received from other major towns and districts of the Valley. Meanwhile a complete shutdown was also observed in highway town of Banihal in Ramban district to pay homage to slain Hizb commander Mannan Wani.
Authorities also suspended class work in all the schools and colleges in Kashmir parts “as a precautionary measure”. Kashmir University ordered suspension of class work at all its campuses.
Meanwhile train service was suspended for security reasons in the Kashmir valley. This is the third time when train service was suspended in the valley for security reasons this week.
Strict restrictions were imposed in Lolab area and Kupwara town to prevent any protests against the killing of Wani who hailed from Tikipora village of the region.
Wani was enrolled as a PhD scholar with the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) before joining Hizb ul Mujahideen militant outfit in January earlier this year. (PTK)
