Lashkar’s Abu Maaz killed in Sopore encounter: Police

Srinagar: Police on Wednesday claimed that one of the two militants killed in Sopore encounter on Tuesday was a top commander of Lashkar-e-Toiba in north Kashmir.

A police spokesman in a statement issued today said that the identity of the second slain militant was established and he turned out to be Lashkar’s top commander Abu Maaz.

On Tuesday, police identified one of the militant as Abdul Majeed Mir, 24, son of Bashir Ahmad Mir. Abdul was arrested in a militancy-related case in 2016 but he escaped from a police station in Bomai village of Sopore in the month of June this year.

The two militants were killed in a fierce gunfight in Tujjar area of Sopore on Tuesday afternoon. (PTK)
