Aadhaar Verdict LIVE Updates: SC Upholds Constitutional Validity With Riders, Says No Need to Link It With Bank Accounts and Mobile Numbers
Supreme Court Verdict on Aadhaar LIVE Updates: Supreme Court Verdict on Aadhaar LIVE Updates: The Supreme Court has declared the Centre’s flagship Aadhaar scheme as constitutionally valid, but with conditions. A five-judge Constitution Bench has ruled that there is no need to link Aadhaar with bank accounts and mobile phones, but held that Aadhaar could be passed as a money bill. The court further says that schools cannot insist on Aadhaar and read down Section 57 of the Aadhaar Act, barring sharing of information with corporate bodies. Justice DY Chandrachud is reading out a dissenting verdict, following which Justice Ashok Bhushan will read his opinion.
A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra had on May 10 reserved the verdict on the matter after a marathon hearing that went on for 38 days, spanning four-and-half months. As many as 31 petitions, including one by former High Court judge KS Puttaswamy, have been filed in the matter. A key argument against the Aadhaar scheme is that it is violative of the nine-judge bench verdict that had held that Right to Privacy is a fundamental right under the Constitution.
