SRINAGAR SEP 12 (PTK): Suspected militants travelling in a truck opened fire near a check post on Jammu-Srinagar highway in Udhampur this morning. The group escaped after the attack, police said.
Police said that the suspected militants opened fire when they were stopped on the highway by security forces as part of routine checking and asked them to step out of the truck.
The firing took place in Jhajar Kotli, near the last police station in Jammu division on the highway. The group was believed to heading to Kashmir. The driver and the conductor of the truck have been taken into custody and are being questioned, police said.
The area has been cordoned off and a high alert has been sounded on the highway after the firing. Police said a search operation is on.
Security personnel recovered rifles from the truck after the firing. “During a routine checking at a ‘naka’ (checkpost) near the Jhajar Kotli police station, one gunman fired at the paramilitary persom and fled into a lane nearby. The area has been cordoned off,” the police said.
Meanwhile Police issued the following statement about the firing incident that took place in Jammu area of Jhajjar Kotli along the Srinagar-Jammu highway.
“Today morning at about 0800 brief encounter took place between police and militants in Jhajjar nalla near police station Jhajjar kotli. The terrorists managed to escape in Jhajjar kotli area and are being searched by police army and CRPF. They are three in number age group between 18 to 22 years, all are putting pithus and two of them have AK rifles and third one with pistol. One of them is wearing Pathan dress and two have pants shirt.”
“Anyone if happens to see them or have any knowledge about them should inform police on SSP PCR Jammu No 7006690780 he would be suitably rewarded.” (PTK)
