SRINAGAR JUNE 22 (PTK): Six including four militants, including Dawood Ahmad commander of (Islamic State Jammu and Kashmir) ISJK, a lesser known militant organisation, a civilian and a cop were killed in a gunfight at Srigufwara area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district today.
Reports, scores of youth were also injured in government forces action during the encounter which also left two army men injured.
A police official confirmed that the other slain militants identified as Majid Manzoor Dar from Talangam Awantipora, Ashraf Itoo from Hatigam Srigufwara and Adil Hassan Mir from Sheipora Srigufwara.
Jammu and Kashmir police chief S P Vaid confirmed that four bodies have been retrieved from the spot. Earlier, Vaid said that the militants were part of the ISJK. The exact association of the group would be clear when all the bodies are identified after a while.
The encounter started early Friday morning, when Army, CRPF and SOG of J&K police, launched a joint crackdown in Khiram village of Srigufwara, following a tip off regarding presence of militants.
The officials claimed that the militants were hiding in the house of Muhammad Yousuf Rather, who along with his wife Hafeeza were injured in the initial firing and shifted to sub-district hospital Bijbehara for treatment.
However, Rather succumbed, while as his wife was shifted to SKIMS hospital in Srinagar for further treatment.
Soon after the encounter hundreds of locals marched towards the encounter spot and protests erupted to help militants escape from the spot. Over 30 civilians were injured during the protests at different protest sites in nearby areas of the encounter spot.
“One SPO was killed and two army men were injured immediately after the contact with the militants was established. A couple in whose house militants were hiding was also injured and one of them has succumbed. Besides four militants were killed.” a senior police official told Press Trust of Kashmir.
However internet service was suspended in Anantnag, Pulwama and Srinagar district after an encounter broke out today early morning.
The internet services were suspended as a “precautionary measure” to avoid any untoward incident. (PTK)
