SRINAGAR, JUNE 11 (PTK): Ahead of Eid-al-Fitr while markets across Kashmir witnessed an increased hustle and bustle on Monday, massive traffic jams hit summer capital Srinagar, especially in the evening hours, caused a huge inconvenience to commuters.
Massive traffic jams were witnessed at Pantha Chowk, Dalgate, Lal Chowk, Rajbagh, Sonwar, MA Road and various other areas of the city.
Long traffic jams were witnessed in the commercial hub of Lal Chowk and the traffic police had a tough time dealing with the chaos on roads. Cars parked wrongly by shoppers added to the traffic chaos.
While traffic in various parts of the city plied fairly smoothly till the afternoon, massive traffic jams were seen during the evening hours, much to the disappointment of the commuters.
“I visited Lal Chowk in the evening but parked my vehicle at Polo View since traffic was moving bumper-to-bumper. It took me at least an hour to travel from Dalgate to Polo View,” said Danish Nabi, a commuter.
Most of the commuters blamed the Traffic Department for the mess, saying the department was worsening the situation with its ‘inefficient means’.
“There are never proper arrangements in terms of traffic in Srinagar. It is always a mess on occasions like Eid. It is better to walk on foot then board a vehicle. The journey in a local bus from Lal Chowk to Amira Kadal takes 45 minutes, which is otherwise a six-minute journey,” said a local, Rameez Hassain.
Commuters blame that the traffic department has become a revenue generation department adding that they concentrate on fine collection and toeing cars. (PTK)
