Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had launched the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ with the aim to make India a clean country by 2019. The Army has been playing a pivotal role in spreading the message of cleanliness throughout the length and breadth of the country. As part of the initiative, the Chinar Corps started the ‘Swachhata Pakhwada’ from 17 Sep to 02 Oct 2017.

The fortnight long programmes spread across the Kashmir Valley commenced from Sonamarg where a massive Cleanliness Drive & Awareness Rally was conducted. The programme witnessed good participation of students, teachers and people from all walks of life. Speaking on the occassion, GOC 31 Sub Area stressed upon the importance of environment protection and exhorted the people to keep their surroundings clean for a healthier and happy life. It was followed by an Awareness Rally through the Sonamarg market where informative placards with slogans were displayed emphasising the virtues of cleanliness. The rally culminated with a Cleanliness Drive along the riverfront & picnic spots of the area to restore it to its pristine beauty. The cleanliness drive was also carried out along the area of Thajewas trekking route. Trekkers, guides and locals joined hand in cleaning the area.

Similar Environment Cleaning Treks are also planned along other frequented trekking routes during the fortnight. A number of other events are being planned across the valley to include cleanliness awareness drives in villages and Swachh Bharat Painting and Poster making Competitions in schools.[PTK]
